Balance is everything! The same principle applies for riding a bicycle around a corner – without hands – as when riding a horse through a corner.

An extremely good exercise for a young horse is to canter in the country, nose lower than in the arena to round the back more, with plenty of drive but in control. This way the young horse can jump more easily with a lower centre of gravity and balance himself rapidly. Cantering in the country should only be attempted once the young horse and the young rider have developed enough confidence in the arena. A runaway horse in the country is too dangerous! These first attempts at cantering in the country should always be in the company of an experienced older horse.
